Airport to city centre: what public transport costs in 20 cities

Twenty cities, one table. Every fare below was taken from the carrier or the transport authority that charges it, not from a price aggregator, and each row carries the date it was checked. In 2 of the twenty the ride into town costs nothing at all.

The local fare is the number the operator charges and is never converted. The comparable column exists only so that twenty cities in two currencies can be put in one order: dollars are brought to euro at the European Central Bank daily reference rate of 1.1576, dated . Floating currencies drift, so treat the last decimal as indicative rather than exact.

* Podgorica is the one gap. The airport lists its bus operators but publishes no fare, and the operators do not post a price list either, so the range comes from ticket sellers rather than from the carriers.

Where the numbers come from

The two research pages behind this table explain each city in detail, including where the cheap option loses to a taxi and where the operator prices the two directions differently: airport to city in 10 European capitals and airport to downtown in 10 North American cities.

Fares change. If you find one that has moved, tell us and we will check it with the operator and update the date in the row rather than quietly edit the number.
