Skopje Public Transport: Buses, Cards and Fares
Skopje runs on JSP buses: 35 denars by app or card, 50 on paper, and no fare listed for the driver. Lines, weekend timetables and where to buy a ticket.
Skopje’s city transport is buses. JSP Skopje, the city operator, lists 48 city lines, 55 suburban lines and 9 night lines in its timetable on 19 October 2026, and none of them runs on rails (its price list also covers the Vodno cable car, which the Vodno guide tracks). A single ride costs 35 denars (about €0.57, $0.64 or £0.48) if you pay with the SkopjeBus app or a JSP smart card, 50 (€0.81) on a paper ticket, and the price list prints no fare at all for paying the driver. So the first job is getting a valid ticket onto your phone or into your hand, and finding the line comes second.
Most visitors need a bus for three trips: from the Transport Centre into town, out to Matka Canyon and up to Mount Vodno. Matka is the trip where the day matters: on a weekday the bus leaves the Transport Centre 8 times, and on a weekend 24.
When the bus beats walking
The centre is small. From the Transport Centre, where the intercity coaches and trains arrive, to Macedonia Square is 1.8 km, about 25 minutes on foot by the OpenStreetMap walking router. That’s fine with a daypack and tiresome with luggage, and a large suitcase may break JSP’s size limit for bags on the bus (see On board). Lines 21 and 22 both start at the Transport Centre and reach the stop Centar Rekord as the fifth stop; the square is about 300 m from there. On Tuesday 20 October 2026 JSP’s timetable lists 24 departures of line 22 from the Transport Centre, between 05:00 and 23:00, and 19 of line 21.
Once you’re in the centre you won’t need the bus. The square, the Stone Bridge and the Old Bazaar sit a short walk apart (the Skopje sightseeing guide gives the walking order). Past the centre, these are the lines worth knowing:
| Line | Runs between | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| 21, 22 | Transport Centre, Centar Rekord, Karposh and City Mall, then on to Bardovci (21) or Lepenec (22) | Station to centre; Karposh |
| 60 | Transport Centre, Goce Delchev Bridge - Kale, Cathedral, Karposh, Gjorche Petrov, Saraj, Matka | The fortress and bazaar side; Matka |
| 25 | Transport Centre, centre, Middle Vodno | The Vodno trails (Vodno guide) |
| Night lines | Nine of them, on their own tab of the timetable | After midnight |
The stop for the fortress and the bazaar’s lanes is called Most Goce Delchev - Kale (Goce Delchev Bridge - Kale), a few minutes’ walk from both. Stop and terminal names in the timetable widget are in Cyrillic, so match the line number, not the name. Routes don’t stand still: between 17 September and 9 October 2026 JSP announced route changes on four lines. Lines 32 and 35a got new routes from 21 September, line 55 was shortened and line 9 was diverted for building works. The notices are in Macedonian at skopjebus.mk/mk/izvestuvanja/.
JSP also runs a sightseeing City Tour bus from the Porta Makedonija arch. Its poster, uploaded in August 2024, gives 11:00 and 17:00 daily and no price; it’s two years old, so confirm it before you plan around it.
Fares and passes
| Ticket | Paid with | Denars | About |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single ride, all lines | App or JSP card | 35 | €0.57 / $0.64 |
| Single ride, paper | Paper | 50 | €0.81 / $0.91 |
| Night single ride | Card, app or paper | 50 | €0.81 / $0.91 |
| Day ticket, all lines | Paper only | 120 | €1.95 / $2.19 |
| 10 rides, valid 15 days from the first validation | Card or app | 250 city lines, 300 all lines | €4.05 or €4.87 |
| 7-day ticket | Card or app | 500 city lines, 600 all lines | €8.11 or €9.73 |
| Monthly ticket | Card or app | 1,400 city lines, 1,600 all lines | €22.70 or €25.95 |
| Unnamed electronic card | - | 150 | €2.43 / $2.74 |
Prices come from the list headed “valid from 1 April 2022”, which was still the one on JSP’s site on 19 October 2026; euros and dollars use the central bank rate of that day (61.66 denars to the euro, 54.80 to the dollar). The small print matters. The cheap fare is wallet-only: JSP’s wording is “only from an electronic wallet via validator or mobile phone”, so paper costs 43% more. The list also names no fare for a ticket bought from the driver, and JSP’s help page names the app, its counters, resellers and a web shop as the ways to buy, with the driver not among them. The app column also prints “40 (185)” beside the 35 without saying what it is. Older advice mentions paying by text to 185, but JSP doesn’t confirm it, so don’t plan around it. And the day ticket exists only on paper.
Getting your first ticket
The app. SkopjeBus, from Modeshift Inc., is on the App Store and Google Play. You register with an e-mail address, a phone number or a Google, Apple or Facebook account, then pay by debit or credit card. The ticket shows as a QR code, which you hold up to the camera at the bottom of the validator. A bought ticket works offline, but buying needs a connection: “You would only need an internet connection to purchase the fare”, says JSP’s help page. Buy on hotel Wi-Fi or once your phone has data, not at a stop with no signal.
The card. An unnamed reusable card is 150 denars; ask at the counter whether any ride credit comes with it. You get it and load it at a JSP sales point or from a reseller. Three counters are open on Sunday morning, two of them central: the one at the exit of the Transport Centre terminal and the one at the stop in front of Green Market, both 08:00-14:00 on Sunday (06:00-19:30 on weekdays, 08:00-18:00 on Saturday); the third is in Gjorche Petrov. Kiosks, small supermarkets and tobacco shops form a second network, listed by district on the same page.
Paper. The 50-denar and 120-denar tickets are what the price list calls “electronic (paper)” tickets. Ask for them at a JSP counter.
Which ticket for how many rides
- Up to three rides a day: app or card at 35 each. Three come to 105.
- Four or more in one day: the paper day ticket (120) beats four taps (140), but by 20 denars, about €0.32. It isn’t worth a detour.
- The card as a saving: it isn’t one. A ride costs 35 on the card or in the app, so the card’s 150 buys you no cheaper ride than the app. Get it only if the app won’t work for you.
- Ten rides: 300 on all lines is 30 a ride, saving about €0.80 against taps. Line 60 is filed under the suburban lines in JSP’s timetable, and the price list doesn’t number the “city lines”, so for Matka buy the all-lines version.
- Seven days: 600 pays from the 18th ride, which means two or three rides every day of the week.
- A month: 1,400 on city lines pays from the 41st ride. That suits a long stay where you commute.
None of these choices moves your budget by more than a few euros a day. The mistake that matters is boarding without a valid ticket: drivers and inspectors check, and JSP’s published documents don’t say what the penalty is.
Weekdays and weekends run two timetables
JSP’s timetable page at skopjebus.mk/en/schedule/ is a date picker: choose the line, then the day. The two days below show why the day matters.
| Line and direction | Tuesday 20 October 2026 | Sunday 25 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 60, Transport Centre to Matka | 8 departures, 06:20 to 22:30 | 24, 06:30 to 22:30 |
| 60, Matka to Transport Centre | 8, 05:20 to 21:30 | from 07:30 (check the last run) |
| 25, Transport Centre to Middle Vodno | 9, 07:50 to 18:50 | 14, 07:50 to 18:50 |
On the Saturdays 31 October and 7 November 2026 the widget lists the same 24 departures to Matka, and the first bus back from Matka leaves at 05:30.
On a weekday the Matka bus leaves the Transport Centre about every 2 hours 20 minutes, at 06:20, 08:40, 11:00, 13:20, 15:40, 18:00, 20:20 and 22:30. Miss one and the wait is long, and on a weekday the last bus from Matka to the Transport Centre is the 21:30. At weekends, check the last run in the timetable at skopjebus.mk/en/schedule/. The 60 also doesn’t always reach the dam, which the Matka Canyon day trip guide explains.
A public holiday gets the Sunday timetable in the widget: for Friday 23 October 2026, the Day of the Macedonian Revolutionary Struggle, it shows 24 departures to Matka, not 8. So check the date you travel, not a similar one.
After midnight, and to the airport
The night lines carry a letter after the number and cost 50 denars a ride. They run thinly: night line 2N, Avtokomanda to Saraj, leaves Avtokomanda at 00:15, 01:45 and 03:15 and Saraj at 01:00, 02:30 and 04:00, on Tuesday 20 and Sunday 25 October 2026. The other night lines run at most four times each way, and some only once. If your bed isn’t on one of them, a taxi is the answer (getting around North Macedonia covers taxis and apps).
No JSP line goes to the airport. The one public bus the airport’s own guide names is the Erak shuttle, a separate company with its own counter and its own fare of 199 denars one way, the price of almost six JSP rides, so don’t expect a JSP card to work on it. Erak’s winter timetable has applied since 25 October 2026 and is posted on its own site, eraktransporter.com; the airport to city centre guide covers its stops and the taxi alternative.
On board
- Doors: you enter by the front door beside the driver and leave by the other two, says JSP’s passenger code.
- Touch in on every ride: card on the reader at the top of the validator, app QR under the camera at the bottom. Drivers, JSP inspectors and city inspectors can ask to see your ticket.
- Children: up to 6 years old they ride free with an adult over 18, and prams and wheelchairs aren’t charged.
- Bags: nothing over 100 x 60 x 25 cm or 30 kg. The 25 cm is the figure to watch, because plenty of large suitcases are thicker. Arrive with big bags by shuttle or taxi, and use the bus once you’ve dropped them.
- Not allowed: bicycles, roller skates and scooters of any kind, and eating, drinking and smoking.
Bank cards, journey times and discounts
- Bank cards: JSP’s help page describes a smart card and the app’s QR code at the validator, and nothing about tapping a bank card. Carry the app.
- Time on the bus: the timetable gives departures from the end stops only. For the ride itself use the planner or the app.
- Reduced fares: the price list has them only as monthly, seasonal or yearly passes for pupils, students, pensioners and a few other listed groups, sold only at JSP’s customer service centres, and none of them is a single ride or a day ticket.
If you need a person, JSP lists a toll-free line, 0800 15 115, and lost property on 02 312 26 34.

Good to know
Fares come from the JSP Skopje price list headed valid from 1 April 2022 (PDF on the server dated 23 February 2026), timetables from the JSP timetable widget, both read on 19 October 2026. Lines, timetables and holiday profiles change by notice: the app, the widget on skopjebus.mk and the driver have the last word.
