The simplest way to get to Ohrid from Skopje is the direct intercity bus from Skopje’s main bus station, which usually takes about 3-4 hours and is the best value for solo travellers. If you land at Skopje Airport (SKP) and want to go straight to the lake, there is no direct airport bus to Ohrid: take the airport shuttle into Skopje and change to a coach, pre-book a private transfer, or rent a car at the airport. Driving or a transfer takes roughly 2.5-3 hours in normal conditions and is the most convenient option for families, late arrivals and road trips.

Ohrid is not hard to reach, but the first decision matters. The cheap route starts in the city, not at the airport. The flexible route is a car. The low-stress route is a door-to-door transfer. Below is the practical breakdown, with the airport connection included and no fixed timetable copied from a site that may change tomorrow.

Quick answer: bus, transfer or car?

OptionBest forTypical timeWhat to check
Bus from Skopje bus stationSolo travellers, low budgetsabout 3-4 hCurrent SAS/operator timetable, seat availability, luggage fee
Private transfer / taxiAirport arrivals, families, late flightsabout 2.5-3 hLive quote, pickup point, vehicle size, cancellation terms
Rental carRoad trips, beaches, St. Naum, Galicicaabout 2.5-3 hDeposit, insurance excess, parking in Ohrid, one-way drop fee

If you are already staying in Skopje, the bus is usually the cleanest answer. If your first night is in Ohrid and your flight lands at SKP, the bus still works, but it becomes a two-step journey: airport to Skopje Central Bus Station, then Skopje to Ohrid. That extra transfer is why many travellers choose a private transfer or collect a car at the airport.

For the destination itself, pair this guide with things to do in Ohrid. If you are spending time in the capital before leaving, start with things to do in Skopje.

Option 1: Skopje to Ohrid by bus

The main bus route runs from Skopje’s main bus station, the Skopska Avtobuska Stanica (SAS), to Ohrid Bus Station. The Skopje station is part of the Transportation Center, beside the railway station, and is the same hub used for most domestic and international coaches.

Public listings usually show multiple daily departures on the Skopje-Ohrid corridor, with a road distance around 173-182 km and journey times mostly in the 3-4 hour range. Treat those numbers as a planning range, not a promise. Operators, departure times and prices change by season, and summer weekends can be busier than the same route in winter. Check the current timetable on SAS or a bus booking aggregator shortly before you travel, then confirm at the station if your timing is tight.

For tickets, the local method is still simple: go to the station, buy at the counter for the operator you are taking, and keep some Macedonian denar (MKD) in cash for tickets, luggage or small fees. Online booking appears on some aggregator sites, but domestic bus availability can be patchy, so the counter remains the most reliable fallback. In July and August, or before a weekend, buy earlier in the day rather than appearing five minutes before the departure you want.

The arrival point, Ohrid Bus Station, is outside the old town but close enough for an easy taxi ride or a determined walk with light luggage. If you are staying inside the old town, remember that many lanes are steep and partly pedestrian; a taxi may only get you to the lower edge, and you may still have a short climb to your guesthouse.

The bus is the right choice if you are travelling light, arriving in Skopje city first, and do not need a car at the lake. It is less ideal if your flight lands late, your hotel is outside Ohrid town, or you plan to visit St. Naum, beaches, Galicica viewpoints and villages on your own schedule.

Option 2: private transfer or taxi

A private transfer is the easiest way to go from Skopje Airport or Skopje city directly to Ohrid. The driver meets you at the terminal or hotel, the vehicle goes door to door, and you avoid the airport shuttle plus bus-station connection. In normal conditions, plan around 2.5-3 hours by road, with extra buffer on summer Fridays, in winter weather or if roadworks slow the Kicevo-Ohrid section.

This is the most comfortable option for:

  • late flights into SKP;
  • families or groups splitting the vehicle cost;
  • travellers with large luggage;
  • anyone staying outside central Ohrid;
  • first-time visitors who do not want to negotiate with taxis after a flight.

Prices vary too much to hard-code. Some public transfer pages quote fixed examples, but the sensible advice is to request a live quote for your date, pickup address, number of passengers and luggage. Confirm whether the price is per vehicle, whether waiting time is included if your flight is delayed, and where the driver will meet you.

If you prefer a Welcome Pickups-style meet-and-greet transfer, compare the current live quote against other private-transfer options and check the waiting-time policy before you pay.

Option 3: rent a car and drive

Driving is the best option if Ohrid is only one part of a wider trip. The main route heads west/southwest from Skopje toward Tetovo, Gostivar and Kicevo before dropping into the Ohrid basin. The distance is roughly 170-180 km, and a normal drive is about 2.5-3 hours without a long stop. Parts of the route are fast motorway or dual carriageway, while the mountain sections are slower and more weather-sensitive.

A car makes sense if you want to use Ohrid as a base for St. Naum, lake beaches, Galicica National Park, Struga, Vevcani or a wider North Macedonia loop. It is less useful if you only want two nights in Ohrid old town, because parking can be awkward and the central sights are better on foot.

Before booking, read the details in our car rental in North Macedonia guide. The important points are the same here: compare the deposit and insurance excess, photograph the car at pickup, check whether your card is accepted for the security hold, and ask about one-way fees if you want to collect in Skopje and drop at Ohrid Airport or in Ohrid town.

From Skopje Airport to Ohrid

This is the part travellers often misread. Skopje International Airport (SKP) is not on the Ohrid bus route, and there is no direct public bus from SKP to Ohrid. Your realistic choices are:

  1. Airport shuttle to Skopje + bus to Ohrid. The official airport guide lists a shuttle to Skopje city / Central Bus Station, with the ticket shown as 199 MKD when checked on 2026-06-25. The timetable is tied to flight arrivals and departures, so check current times - our Skopje Airport to the city center guide covers the shuttle and taxi fares in detail. From the bus station, take an Ohrid coach.
  2. Private transfer from SKP to Ohrid. This is the simplest door-to-door route and the best late-arrival choice. Get a live quote before travel.
  3. Rental car at SKP. Good if you are building a lake-and-mountains trip and want the car anyway.
  4. Airport taxi to Skopje + onward bus. Works if the shuttle timing is poor, but it still leaves you changing at the bus station.

If you land in Skopje after the last useful Ohrid bus, do not force the connection. Sleep in Skopje and leave the next morning, book a transfer, or rent a car. For a first visit, an overnight in the capital is not wasted time; the Old Bazaar and the Stone Bridge are easy to cover before heading west.

What about Ohrid Airport?

Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport (OHD) sits about 10 km from Ohrid and is very convenient when flights line up. The catch is that it is a smaller, seasonal airport, so it will not always have the route or date you need. Ground transport is also simpler than in Skopje: expect taxi, hotel pickup, pre-booked transfer or a rental car, and check current options before arrival.

If you can fly into Ohrid and your trip is lake-focused, it saves the Skopje transfer entirely. If you are combining Skopje, Matka, Ohrid and the national parks, SKP plus a car or SKP plus bus may still be the better itinerary.

Which route should you choose?

Choose the bus if you are budget-conscious, already in Skopje, and staying in Ohrid town. Choose a private transfer if you arrive at SKP and want the least friction, especially with luggage or children. Choose a rental car if you want to turn the transfer into a road trip and explore beyond Ohrid’s old town.

For many travellers, the best compromise is mixed: spend one or two nights in Skopje without a car, take the bus to Ohrid, then rent locally for one or two days to reach St. Naum, beaches and viewpoints. If you are doing the classic loop, the 7-day North Macedonia itinerary shows how the legs fit together.

Practical tips

  • Check current times, not old blog posts. Bus schedules and airport shuttle times change; use current SAS/operator pages and confirm at the station when needed.
  • Carry denar. Cards are improving, but bus counters, luggage fees and small taxis are easier with cash.
  • Book summer Ohrid transport earlier. July and August bring local holiday traffic and fuller buses.
  • Do not rely on trains. There is no passenger train to Ohrid.
  • Add buffer from the airport. Shuttle wait time plus bus-station transfer can turn a simple trip into a half-day.
  • Think about your first night. Late SKP arrivals are often better solved by sleeping in Skopje or booking a transfer.

Once you arrive, keep the plan simple: base near the lake, walk the old town, and save any car time for the shore road, beaches and national park viewpoints. The transfer is only the first step; the reward is having Ohrid’s churches, lanes and water within easy reach.
