Ohrid Airport Overhaul Hits 65% - Flights Unaffected
Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport (OHD) reconstruction is about 65% done; flights keep running, so summer trips to Lake Ohrid are not disrupted.
Work on Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport (OHD) is now roughly 65% complete, and crucially for summer travellers, flights have not been interrupted. The roughly €2.7 million project, run by operator TAV Macedonia, is reshaping the gateway to Lake Ohrid without closing it - so anyone flying in for a beach week on the lake this season can expect business as usual.
What is being rebuilt
The departures area is the furthest along at about 85% finished. The administration building is being more than doubled in size, growing from 290 m² to 746 m². New check-in desks are already in place, and a partial baggage-handling system is up and running, so passengers are starting to see the upgrade in the parts of the terminal they actually use.
Will it disrupt my trip?
No. According to the source report from 16 June 2026, flights continue normally throughout the works, and completion is expected in roughly two months. For visitors that means the usual seasonal routes into Ohrid stay open during the July-August peak, when the lakeside town is busiest. If you are still mapping out the trip, see our guide to things to do in Ohrid and the wider Lake Ohrid overview.
Why a better OHD matters
Ohrid is North Macedonia’s prime summer destination, and a smarter airport shortens the gap between landing and the water. OHD mainly handles seasonal and charter traffic, so the country’s other hub, Skopje (SKP), remains the year-round entry point - useful to know when you compare arrival options in our getting around and trip planning sections. Renting a car at either airport is often the easiest way to reach the lake; weigh it up in our car rental guide.
The bottom line for summer 2026
Book as normal. The overhaul is visible but non-disruptive, the departures hall and check-in are already modernised, and the full fit-out should wrap up within about two months. Pair your flight with one of our North Macedonia routes to make the most of the trip.
