Skopje at Christmas & New Year: Concert, Market, Vodici

Skopje over Christmas and New Year: the square concert and Christmas market, Badnik, Orthodox Christmas on 7 January, Vodici, and which days are days off.

Skopje’s Christmas season is a city-run affair on Macedonia Square. In 2025 the tree lit up on 15 December, a Christmas market opened the same evening, the city billed something there every evening from 18:00, and 31 December ended with a Macedonian pop concert. For anyone raised on a December Christmas, the calendar is the surprise: 25 December isn’t a national day off here, because the local Christmas is 7 January, with Badnik on 6 January and the blessing of the waters, Vodici, on 19 January. The only 2026 document we found by 24 October is a tender for the decorations, with the lights due on by 15 December, so the times below are from the last two seasons, and they’re the best guide you’ve got until the 2026 programme is announced.

The square from 15 December

In 2025 the city branded its holiday programme Skopje - a New Year winter fairy tale and held it from 15 to 31 December. Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski launched the programme on 15 December: the tree was lit at 18:00, a children’s choir sang, and a Christmas market opened on the square the same night. From then to 31 December the city promised something every evening at 18:00: live acts, DJ sets and performances. Weekends had a children’s programme from 12:00 to 14:00, and Father Christmas arrived on the square at noon on 27 December. Reports from the opening night mention food and drink stalls and New Year decorations at the market. The city described the opening as the start of a new holiday tradition, which hints that the market will return, though nothing said so by 24 October 2026.

For 2026 the one document in public is the decoration tender, reported on 22 October 2026. It asks for a 13-metre tree, a four-metre light-up deer, a sleigh to be photographed in, lights on by 15 December at the latest, and everything coming down between 15 and 25 January 2027. So it’s a safe bet the square will be decorated from mid-December into mid-January. The stage, the market and the daily acts are separate decisions, and in 2025 the city announced them in December.

New Year’s Eve on the square

Two seasons show the pattern: the same square, the City of Skopje behind both, and a bill of Macedonian acts each time. What differs is how much notice you get.

In 2024 it was unclear until 27 December whether the city would stage anything on the square at all, and the line-up came out the same day. In 2025 the two biggest names were public three weeks ahead. So book the flight and the bed for the date and the place, and don’t build a trip around one act. The 2025 party was scheduled to run until 01:00, and the mayor said on 15 December, the opening day, that it would have no fireworks. Midnight was billed as a stage moment, with Gocheva singing, not a sky show, and that’s worth knowing if a fireworks view is what you’re travelling for.

Other districts have staged their own parties. On 31 December 2024, Kisela Voda held a show in the Rasadnik sports arena at 20:00 and Shuto Orizari an open-air party with Roma music, while the city’s concert played on the square. Each municipality announces its own, so check once the programme appears. The fixed dates of the other months are in our events calendar.

Landing in the holiday weeks

Skopje Airport is out of town, and the airport shuttle and the airport taxi, with their fares, are laid out on our airport transfer guide. Two things matter in this season. The shuttle moves to a winter timetable after 25 October 2026, so summer departure times are out of date. And a late landing doesn’t need a booking: the airport’s authorised taxis wait at the terminal exit 24 hours a day on a published price list, so a transfer booked before you fly is an option, not a necessity. If you’re choosing where to sleep, where to stay in Skopje covers the districts, and a base in the Centre puts you within a 10-15 minute walk of the square.

Which Christmas: the days off

This is where visitors get caught. The official lists give three different kinds of day, and Western Christmas is the odd one out.

DateWhatWho gets the day off
Tue 8 Dec 2026St Clement of OhridEveryone
Fri 25 Dec 2026Christmas by the Western calendarCitizens of the Catholic faith only
Fri 1 Jan 2027New YearEveryone
Wed 6 Jan 2027Badnik, Christmas EveOrthodox citizens
Thu 7 Jan 2027Christmas by the Orthodox calendarEveryone
Tue 19 Jan 2027Epiphany, VodiciOrthodox citizens

The 2026 rows are from the ministry’s programme of non-working days, and the 2027 rows follow the Law on Holidays as the press laid them out in September 2026, so confirm the January dates once the ministry’s own 2027 programme is out. The two Orthodox-only days are days off for Orthodox citizens rather than for everyone, so opening hours will be uneven, and anything you’ve built a plan around, a museum or a restaurant, deserves a message first. Meanwhile, the programme in 2025 included 25 December like any other evening of the fortnight.

On 7 January 2026 Archbishop Stefan celebrated the Christmas liturgy in the Cathedral of St Clement of Ohrid. It’s a working church that day, so go as a guest and keep the camera low.

Badnik, 6 January: twigs and a procession

Badnik is Christmas Eve, and in Skopje in 2026 it was a daytime affair in two parts. At the cathedral, Badnik twigs were blessed and handed out in the churchyard, the Badnik cup passed to the year’s new sponsor in the presence of the archbishop, and the bread was blessed. At 12:00 the central Badnik procession set off from the City of Skopje Museum, walked down Makedonija Street to Macedonia Square and finished at the stage there, followed by a musical show with more than 40 performers. The organisers listed processions in more than 80 towns the same day.

Both parts are daytime events, with the procession setting off at noon, so if you land on the evening of 6 January, you’ve missed them. In 2027 the date falls on a Wednesday, and in 2026 the earliest times we found were published on 5 and 6 January.

Vodici, 19 January: the cross in the river

Vodici is Epiphany, the day water is blessed, and the spectacle is a cross thrown into a river or lake with volunteers racing to bring it back. Skopje does it in the Vardar, in the middle of town. In 2026 the liturgy started at 09:00, the procession went to the Sloboda bridge by the Holiday Inn, and at about noon Archbishop Stefan lowered the cross. About 160 people registered to dive, each with an ID and a sports-medicine certificate, so as a visitor you’ll be one of the thousands watching from the embankment, and you’ll want a place by the river well before noon.

Ohrid holds its own on the same day, and the timing is different: in 2026 the cross was laid in the lake from the harbour pier at 10:00, with a concert on St Clement of Ohrid Square at noon. The municipality warned swimmers that the water was about 9 °C. Since both fall on one date, pick a town rather than hoping to catch both. In 2027, 19 January is a Tuesday.

The week before brings one more January fixture: the Vevčani Carnival on 13-14 January, which in 2027 means Wednesday and Thursday.

Cold, dark and short: planning the days

Skopje in the holidays is a cold valley. January highs average around 5 °C with nights down to about -3 °C, December is a degree or two milder, and the sun shows up for only about 2.5-3 hours a day, so the evening programme means standing outdoors in the dark, and you’ll want a proper coat. Our weather by month page has the figures and the packing list.

Plan the daylight around indoor and short outdoor stops: the Old Bazaar and the sights in our Skopje sightseeing guide, then the square at 18:00. For a day out, Matka Canyon is the short one, and best day trips from Skopje compares the rest. Whether the lifts at Mavrovo run depends on snow that month, so check the resort’s live status before you commit to a ski day.

If your dates fall in early December, the Taksirat festival is on Monday 7 December 2026, and 8 December is a day off for everyone.

If you can pick your dates, three windows work. From 15 to 23 December, on the 2025 pattern, you get the lit square, the market and the evening acts, and no national day off falls in that stretch. From 30 December to 1 January you add the New Year’s Eve concert, which the city staged on the square in both 2024 and 2025, and 1 January is a day off for everyone. From 5 to 7 January you catch the Badnik procession, which set off at noon on the 6th in 2026, and Christmas on the 7th, with Vevčani’s carnival a week later and Vodici on the 19th if you stay on.

What’s still open as of 24 October 2026

Four things you can’t fix yet, and when they usually surface:

  • The 2026 square programme and the Christmas market. In 2025 the mayor presented the programme at a press conference on 15 December, the opening day itself; the 2026 lights are due by the same date.
  • New Year’s Eve performers. In the last two seasons the first names came out anywhere from three weeks to four days before the night.
  • Badnik and Vodici hours. In January 2026 the Badnik details appeared on 5 and 6 January, Ohrid’s Vodici plan on 13 January, while Skopje’s registration for the dive opened on 3 January. Use the 2026 times above as the template, not as a promise.
  • The ministry’s 2027 list of days off. The press calendars already carry the 2027 dates under the Law on Holidays; the ministry’s own programme for 2026 came out in November 2025, so expect the 2027 one around then.

The holiday dates and the Taksirat night are fixed for 2026-27; every hour, line-up and route above is from the last two seasons, so read them as the pattern until the city publishes its 2026 programme.
