Moving to North Macedonia: Start Here 2026
Move in order: entry, police registration, residence, housing, tax, health. Live numbers sit on the linked pages, not here.
People land in Skopje with a spreadsheet and a rumour. The rumour is usually a “nomad visa”. The spreadsheet is usually someone else’s rent. Both will waste a week. Moving here is a sequence: can you enter, can you stay the first nights legally, which residence ground actually exists, then housing, tax, health, a phone, a bank. Each of those already has a page on this site. This one is the order they should happen in, and a warning about copying numbers between pages.
Immigration and tax pages can hurt you when they’re wrong. Confirm live rules with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Interior (and a licensed lawyer for your case) before you file. I am not your adviser.
Start with a sequence not a product
There is no single product called “moving to North Macedonia”. There is entry, then a police stamp or a hotel ledger, then a residence ground, then a life. Jumping to company registration because a blog said the tax is pretty is how people miss the police registration step and then try to unwind it from a coworking cafe.
Use the linked pages for every figure that can move: rents, tax rates, permit fees, insurance premiums, desk prices. If a number isn’t on this page, that’s deliberate.
Can you even enter
Your passport’s expiry date is a different question from “how long may I stay”, and both answers live in the same place: the Law on Foreigners, not in your own government’s travel advisory. Article 11 wants a travel document valid at least three months beyond the date you plan to leave - the Ministry of Foreign Affairs puts it in English as “valid at least 3 months beyond the period of intended stay” - and issued within the previous 10 years. Read that twice before you book a long stay. Three months past your departure is not three months past your arrival: plan a full 90 days here and you need roughly six months of validity on the day you land. A passport that expires 91 days after touchdown sails through the version of this rule that circulates on travel blogs and fails the real one at the border.
The stay itself is 90 days in any 180, and the statute says it in the form that matters: no longer than 90 days within any period of 180 days. That is a rolling count, not a per-visit reset. A day trip out and back does not hand you a fresh 90, and the border can look back across the previous 180 days and add up what you already spent. The visa requirements page works that arithmetic through.
Both rules bind every foreigner, whatever passport you carry. Citizenship changes exactly one thing: whether you need a visa at all. US, UK, EU, Canadian and Australian passports do not. Russian passports have since 21 March 2022. Check your own on the MFA’s per-nationality tool instead of trusting what worked for someone else.
The detail I am not reprinting here - who may enter on an ID card, who needs a C visa, which narrow exception expires on a calendar date - lives on the North Macedonia visa and entry page and behind the MFA tool above. Those lists move. A hub page that copies them is a hub page that lies within a month.
How you physically arrive - flights into Skopje, buses, the Ohrid seasonal pattern - is getting to North Macedonia. This hub does not copy fares.
Day one register with the police
The law puts this job on whoever is housing you before it puts anything on you. Article 190 of the Law on Foreigners splits it three ways. Paid accommodation - a hotel, a hostel, a licensed apartment operator - has 12 hours to report your stay. Any other host, a friend with a spare room or a private landlord, has 48 hours. Only where nobody has reported you does the duty land on you personally, and then the clock runs 48 hours from the moment you crossed the border. The Ministry of Interior publishes the form in English, not only in Macedonian.
So the 48-hour number that gets quoted at arriving travellers is the fallback, and the tighter deadline belongs to the business you are paying. Our rentals page carries that same 12-hour line for landlords. Keep whatever confirmation you get until you leave.
Two more things, because the internet gets both wrong. None of this depends on your nationality: article 190 says foreigners and stops there. And the “de-register 24 hours before you leave” line is not a tourist rule - article 188 attaches it to holders of approved temporary or permanent residence, and the short-stay chapter imposes nothing of the kind. The statute is not perfectly tidy here, since the penalty schedule in article 218 mentions de-registration beside the article 190(3) duty, so if an officer asks you for it, do it and argue afterwards. Hold a residence card and it is squarely yours.
That’s the day-one job most blogs skip because it isn’t glamorous. A short-let apartment is where it bites: the operator counts as paid accommodation and is on the 12-hour clock, but plenty of hosts behave as though nobody is watching. Ask who files it before you check in, not on day three. And don’t invent a fine amount from a US travel page and treat it as Macedonian law - the statute does carry penalties, for the host and for the foreigner, and the figure is not something to lift from a listicle.
You’re not “moved” when the plane lands. You’re moved when the police file exists.
Pick a legal ground then file
I went to the statute and the ministry instead of to a listicle. The Law on Foreigners carries no digital-nomad category at all: not under that name, not as remote work, not as any “work from anywhere” permit. The 2025 amendments, in force from 26 September 2025, added none either. The MFA publishes three visa types, A, C and D, and nothing shaped like a nomad permit. Invest North Macedonia says the same from the business side: its work-visas page enumerates the grounds for temporary residence - work, study, exchange programmes, training, volunteering, research, medical treatment, nursing homes, family reunion, humanitarian reasons, close family of a citizen, origin, a child born here, and an EU or OECD resident who acquired property under the law - and the word nomad appears nowhere in it.
What remote workers actually file is on the digital nomad visa page (it exists to kill the myth) and, for the real routes, residence permit: work or property. Those pages carry the numbers this hub refuses to copy: how long a temporary card usually runs, the property-value threshold, the 2025 filing window. Don’t remix them here. Open them.
A visit is not a residence right. When the visit clock runs out, you need a ground, not optimism.
Work a company or neither
Some people arrive with a local job. Some register a company because that’s the self-employment path. Some buy a home because that’s a different path with a different nationality filter. Mixing those three in your head is how you pay a lawyer to undo a DOO you didn’t need.
Company and tax mechanics live on registering a company (DOO/DOOEL) and tax and North Macedonia taxes for expats. Headline rates, social contributions, VAT, the 183-day test - all there. This page will not quote them. Residence and tax residence are decided by different bodies. The residence page already flags that. Believe it.
If you’re not earning locally and not buying, you may simply be visiting. That’s allowed, on the terms of your entry. It is not a secret fourth visa.
A flat before the permit or after
Landlords want a story. The police want an address. Those two demands arrive in the wrong order for almost everyone. A short let that a hotel-style operator will register is often the first-month solution; a longer lease is a later one. How that market actually behaves in Skopje and Ohrid - seasons, districts, what “furnished” means - is long-term rentals in Skopje and Ohrid. What a month costs, in planning bands, not a fake city-wide average, is cost of living in North Macedonia. Buying instead of renting is buying property as a foreigner.
I’m not dropping euro rents into this paragraph. They go stale, and they already live on those pages.
Daily texture - which city, which cafe, which mountain weekend - is living in Skopje and Ohrid as a nomad. Use it after the paperwork outline, not as a substitute for it.
Health cover while the file is open
Public enrolment, private clinics, what a residence permit does and does not buy: healthcare in North Macedonia for expats. Travel-shaped policies, including what a visitor still needs: North Macedonia travel insurance.
This hub does not quote contribution percentages or clinic walk-in prices. They belong with the operator or the fund. What you should notice in the sequence is the gap: you can be physically here, registered with the police, and still waiting on a residence decision. That’s the gap a long-stay international policy is for - read the wording, don’t scrape a premium from a screenshot.
Phone bank and everyday setup
An eSIM gets you out of the arrivals hall. Local prepaid comes later. Comparisons and current plan prices: best eSIM for North Macedonia. This page will not paste a megabyte table.
A bank account is its own queue, with its own documents: banking in North Macedonia. A desk to work from is not a visa: coworking in Skopje. Don’t treat a day-pass receipt as proof of residence.
An order that does not fight itself
Do this in a line, not in a pile:
- Check on the MFA’s per-nationality tool whether your passport needs a visa, then read the visa requirements page. Pack a passport valid three months past your planned departure date and issued within the last 10 years. That test is the same for every nationality.
- Land. Paid accommodation must report you within 12 hours, a private host within 48, and only if neither did is it on you, within 48 hours of the border. Keep the confirmation.
- Decide the ground: work, company, property, family - or admit you’re visiting. Open residence permit. Ignore nomad-visa ads.
- Only then sign a longer lease or start a purchase file. Rentals and buying wait until the ground is chosen.
- Company and tax after the ground, not before, unless the ground is the company. DOO/DOOEL, then taxes.
- Health cover in the waiting period; local enrolment when the file allows it. Healthcare for expats.
- Phone, bank, desk last. They make the days nicer. They do not legalise the stay.
If a step is unclear, stop and ask the ministry or a lawyer. “Looks fine on a blog” is not a ground. The numbers you need are on the pages linked above. This page’s job was to stop you from grabbing all of them at once and calling that a plan.
Admission and opening hours
Entry, registration and residence rules change. This page is a sequence map, and its hard rules come from the Law on Foreigners rather than from a foreign travel advisory. Confirm live requirements with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (mfa.gov.mk) and the Ministry of Interior (mvr.gov.mk) before you act. Checked 3 September 2026.
